! Why This Training Matters

Nail guns are powerful, fast, and extremely useful on construction sites — but they are also one of the most dangerous hand-held tools in the industry. In the UK, nail gun injuries send thousands of workers to hospital every year. Nails can penetrate deeply into hands, feet, and other body parts in a fraction of a second, often without the user realising what has happened.

This training covers the safe use of nail guns — in particular cordless gas-powered nailers such as the Paslode range — including tool operation, fuel cell and battery handling, PPE requirements, maintenance, and what to do in an emergency.

Note: This course covers awareness for all OBR operatives who may use or work near nail guns. Specific tool familiarisation must also be completed using the manufacturer instructions for each tool type used on site.

1 Types of Nail Guns and How They Work

Different nail gun types are used in construction. Understanding how each works is essential for safe use.

Cordless Gas-Powered (e.g. Paslode)

Uses a fuel cell (gas canister) and battery-powered ignition to fire nails. No compressor or air hose required. Highly portable — widely used on OBR sites for timber framing, decking, and structural work. The fuel cell must be the correct type for the tool.

Pneumatic (Air-Powered)

Connected to a compressed air supply via a hose. High power and fast. Risk of accidental discharge from the air hose as well as the tool. Air hose connections must be checked before use.

Cordless Battery-Powered

Electrically driven. No fuel cell required. Quieter than gas-powered tools. Battery charge must be checked before use. Damage to lithium batteries can cause fire risk.

How Nail Guns Fire

Most nail guns have two safety mechanisms that must both be activated to fire: the trigger AND the nose contact (tip safety). Both must be depressed simultaneously. Understanding this prevents accidental firing.

Key hazard: Nail guns can fire a nail with enough force to penetrate timber, concrete block, steel, and human bone. A nail can travel through the workpiece and injure someone on the other side. Always check what is behind the work surface before nailing.

2 Fuel Cells and Batteries (Gas-Powered Tools)

Gas-powered nailers such as the Paslode range require a fuel cell (gas canister) and a charged battery to operate. Both must be handled and stored correctly.

Fuel cells — safe handling and storage:

Battery Safety

  • Use only the manufacturer-approved battery for the tool
  • Check the battery is fully charged before starting work
  • Never use a damaged, swollen, or leaking battery
  • Do not expose batteries to water or extreme heat
  • Charge batteries in a ventilated area away from flammables

Fuel Cell Quantities on Site

Fuel cells are classified as flammable gas. The quantity stored on site must comply with the site fire plan. Excess stock must be kept in a designated flammable materials storage area — not left in the work area or in site cabins.

Fire risk: Fuel cells contain liquefied flammable gas. Never use or store near open flames, hot work areas, or sources of ignition. If a fire breaks out near stored fuel cells, evacuate the area immediately and call 999.

3 Safe Operation of Nail Guns

The majority of nail gun injuries are caused by unsafe working practices, not tool malfunction. Following the correct operating procedure every time eliminates most of the risk.

Double fire / bump fire: Some nail guns have a sequential fire mode and a contact (bump) fire mode. Contact fire mode is faster but significantly more dangerous — the tool will fire every time the nose contacts a surface. OBR Construction policy is to use sequential fire mode only unless specifically authorised by a supervisor.

4 PPE Requirements

The following PPE is mandatory when using or working near nail guns on OBR sites. PPE must be worn for the entire duration of nail gun use — not just when actively firing.

Safety Glasses or Goggles

Flying fragments, broken nails, and wood splinters are common when nailing. Safety glasses (EN 166) are the minimum — goggles provide better protection when working overhead or at unusual angles. Standard prescription glasses are not adequate.

Hearing Protection

Gas-powered nailers produce a loud report each time they fire. Prolonged use without hearing protection causes permanent hearing damage. Ear defenders or earplugs rated for the noise level must be worn during sustained use.

Safety Boots

Steel or composite toe cap boots (EN ISO 20345) are mandatory. Foot injuries from dropped tools and misfired nails are common. Anti-penetration midsoles (S1P/S3) are recommended where nails may fall or ricochet onto the floor.

Gloves

Wear cut-resistant gloves when handling nails and loading the tool. However, avoid bulky gloves when operating the trigger — they can reduce sensitivity and increase the risk of accidental activation. Use close-fitting gloves only.

Bystanders: Anyone working within 2 metres of an active nail gun must wear eye and hearing protection. Supervisors are responsible for enforcing this. If bystanders will not wear PPE, cease nail gun operations until the area is clear.

5 Maintenance, Clearing Jams, and Emergency Response

Routine maintenance:

Clearing a jammed nail — safe procedure:

  1. Point the tool in a safe direction — away from people
  2. Remove the fuel cell
  3. Remove the battery
  4. Wait 30 seconds to allow the combustion chamber to clear of any residual gas
  5. Open the nose/magazine as per the manufacturer instructions to access the jam
  6. Remove the jammed nail carefully — do not use another nail as a lever
  7. Inspect the nose and drive blade before reloading
Never clear a jam with the fuel cell or battery fitted. The tool can fire during the clearing process. Always disconnect power sources first.
If a nail gun injury occurs:
  • Call 999 immediately — nail gun injuries always require hospital treatment
  • Do not attempt to remove the nail — this can cause further damage and increased bleeding
  • Apply pressure around (not on) the nail to control bleeding
  • Keep the casualty still and calm until the ambulance arrives
  • Report the incident to your supervisor and record it in the accident book
  • Preserve the scene — the tool should not be used again until investigated

  • Store fuel cells in hot vehicles or near ignition sources
  • Carry the tool with your finger on the trigger
  • Attempt to remove a nail from an injury site
Remember: A nail gun injury can happen in a fraction of a second. The tip safety and trigger safety exist for a reason — never override them. Treat a nail gun with the same respect you would give a firearm.
